In celebration of the Pokemon 30th anniversary and Tokyo Banana’s 35th anniversary the two came together once again for a great new campaign and products. I just had to get my hands on the cutest Pikachu eco bag around when I saw this announcement.

As someone who has been living in Tokyo for almost a decade now I admit that I take omiyage souvenirs from here for granted a lot. Tokyo Banana of course is no exception. The only time I ever really eat the snack is when I happen to bring it to someone else and they share with me.

For those unfamiliar with the Tokyo exclusive omiyage snack they are banana shaped cakes filled with banana custard. In the case of the Pikachu version it has a filling themed after the Nanab Berry which is a banana shaped fruit in the game series.

There are also 6 different Pikachu designs on them so it makes for a fun gacha experience as well.

If banana flavor isn’t your thing while the Pokemon Tokyo Banana doesn’t offer other flavors yet the regular Tokyo Banana does have seasonal flavors and collaborations throughout the year. Right now they have these cute seasonal calico cat ones that are white peach flavored available from now until the middle of September.

Alongside the new Pikachu Tokyo Banana eco bag sets there were also new Pokemon chocolate cookie sandwiches that come in collectible tins with washi tape or stickers. There are medium sized tins of Pikachu and Eevee featuring the respective Pokemon themed cookies and a smaller box with both kinds. The cookies also feature 6 different designs of each character on the cookies themselves and the packaging.

Be sure to check the expiration date on omiyage as some can expire much faster than others. For example the Pikachu Tokyo Banana I bought had a much earlier best by date than the Pokemon chocolate cookie sandwiches by a whole month.

Speaking of stickers, anyone who buys Pokemon Tokyo Banana products at the participating locations will get a special sticker sheet. While the list of stores is provided in Japanese on the official announcement I’ll go ahead and list them here and the dates in English.

In the end I picked up the 8 piece Pikachu Tokyo Banana and eco bag set and the 8 piece Pokemon chocolate cookie sandwiches that comes with washi tape. I also got the special sticker sheet for buying Pokemon Tokyo Banana products and it all came in a cute themed paper bag. These will set you back quite a bit more than the normal non-themed Tokyo Banana omiyage but that’s the price you pay for popular and cute character theming.

Since it’s summer I definitely recommend putting snacks like the Pikachu Tokyo Banana in the fridge to chill for a cooler snack and a bit of a change in flavor. The official Tokyo Banana website has a whole page dedicated to fun ways to arrange them into brand new snacks as well. It’s currently only available in Japanese but if anyone wants me to translate sometime I’d be happy to!
I’ll have a full taste test later when I get to share them with my extended family on our trip back to America. It will be their first time trying Tokyo Banana so I’m excited to hear their impressions too.
Have you ever had Tokyo Banana before? How did you like it? Do you want the Pikachu Tokyo Banana eco bag? What other snack arrangements would you like to try with Tokyo Banana? Share your thoughts and stories in the comments!
