Muji is a popular store and brand in Japan famous for its simple and functional lifestyle products. One of their most well known products is actually their collection of curries. They are most well known for their butter chicken curry however they have many other curry flavors to offer as well.
My partner and I decided to try out one of their spiciest and least spicy flavors respectively. I chose the Mild Green Curry flavor and my partner chose Chicken Curry with Three Kinds of Chili Peppers. The two curries couldn’t have been any more different sitting on both extremes of the spice meter.

The Mild Green Curry is a green curry made with coconut milk instead of chili peppers and mixed with herbs. It sounded like the perfect kind of someone like myself who has absolutely no spice tolerance especially when it comes to things like curry. Muji recommends it for those who don’t like spicy food or children so it was a perfect match up for me. It was carefully developed to appear and taste as close to regular green curry as possible minus the spiciness which was the biggest draw for me because my spice intolerance meant I could never really eat green curry. It pairs best with jasmine rice but we just prepared a pot of normal Japanese short grain rice to share.
I was really impressed by the amount of ingredients in the curry and how they didn’t skimp on the size and amount of vegetables. It really did look just like the picture on the packaging and was just the right amount for a single serving. The aroma of the herbs and coconut milk were also very striking as I poured it into my bowl and took the first bite. The flavor was very mild and would have felt almost too plain had it not been for the coconut milk and herbs. I definitely want to try it again sometime with jasmine rice as Muji recommends.
The Chicken Curry with Three Kinds of Chili Peppers is of course made with three different types of chili peppers balanced to create not just spiciness and aroma but also a deep and complex flavor. It was inspired by spicy North Indian curries and has a lingering heat meant to satisfy spicy curry lovers. Muji recommends pairing it with naan but again we just had normal rice with our curries this time around.
Just like the Mild Green Curry, there was a generous serving of ingredients in the Chicken Curry with Three Kinds of Chili Peppers. Once again the aroma was very striking as was the striking color of the curry. Just the smell alone had me tasting spicy in the air. I took one little test bite and my mouth would have stayed on fire had I not been eating the Mild Green Curry. On the other hand this was the perfect spice kick for my partner who dug in with reckless abandon and some pickles to cut through the spiciness. He said it was great and he would be happy to try it again whenever he gets that spicy curry itch.
Overall for the price and the amount that’s in each of these curries we definitely recommend them to anyone who is curious about the flavors or just a curry lover. They’re perfect heat up and eat quick meals that are both filling and well balanced.
