McDonald’s 35 Years of Tsukimi Moon Viewing Season Menus With Special Burgers and Sweets

We tried out some of the Tsukimi Moon Viewing Season menu at McDonald’s in celebration of its 35 year anniversary. You can check out the full menu spread from their social media post below including a variety of burgers and sweet treats to choose from.
What is Tsukimi? It can be loosely translated into moon viewing and is a time in Japan where there are festivals in honor of the full autumn moon. This usually happens yearly in September and October and today many companies also celebrate with special menus and merchandise in celebration. Typical traditions include displaying pampas grass and moon decorations and eating tsukimi dango rice dumplings.
We picked up a dinner time order and tried two of the Tsukimi burgers, the special sauce for the McNuggets, Tsukimi McShakes, and the Tsukimi pie.
I loved the very simple yet stylized design of the Tsukimi menu packaging. The two little rabbits drawn in traditional art styles stand out next to the giant moon which is the main event.
McDonald’s also posted some of their older designs in celebration of the anniversary. It’s really neat to see them all side by side and compare how the designs have changed over the years.
We tried the Tsukimi Burger and the Seared Gyu-Sukiyaki Tsukimi Burger. The Tsukimi Burger is their signature limited autumn burger that is a combination of domestically produced eggs, a juicy beef patty, smoked bacon, and a creamy tomato sauce.
The Seared Gyu-Sukiyaki Tsukimi Burger is a bit of an upgraded version of the Tsukimi Burger that features a savory, seared sukiyaki filling and a soft, chewy bun. We found both burgers to be really refreshing and had us imagining them more as breakfast flavor profiles than dinner ones. The Seared Gyu-Sukiyaki Tsukimi Burger in particular was a bit messy to eat much like how it looked when unwrapped but it was a very delicious and flavor filled burger. While we felt neither was something we needed to order more of while they lasted we were glad we tried out these limited time burgers!
As with most Japanese menus for Tsukimi season the highlight is egg and McDonald’s made sure to do so even in the special seasonal sauce for their chicken McNuggets. The Golden Egg Tartar Sauce was very eggy and rich with a slight sweetness that matched quite well with the salty and savory nuggets and fries. Not pictured is the Tokudai Special Large McNugget and French Fry Set itself that we usually get for Yoru Nighttime McDonald’s. It’s two large French fries with fifteen McNuggets and three sauces of your choice. Highly recommend this one for families, sharing, or if you just really want to eat some fries and nuggets since you get more than enough and you can try out a lot of sauces which is great when there are seasonal ones.
While not part of the Tsukimi menu the McChicken during the Yoru Mac menu comes in a special Bai double version with two chicken patties. There’s a whole menu of Bai Burgers for Yoru Mac that include extra patties including the Big Mac so if you find yourself extra hungry after 5pm it’s a great place to get some value and fill your tummy up.
For dessert we had the Tsukimi McShake with Nagano prefecture-grown shine muscat grapes which never disappoint. The sweetness of the shine muscat grapes cut through the very eggy flavored dinner and left us feeling rather refreshed for a fast food dinner. We definitely recommend these McShakes whether you want to have something sweet with your meal or by themselves as a snack.
Finally we wrapped up the dinner with the Tsukimi Pie made with Hokkaido butter, anko red bean paste, and mochi. It was the perfect little dessert hitting sweet and a bit of salty flavors with the best combination of crunch and chewiness. Definitely my favorite part of the Tsukimi menu we got to try out and I highly recommend anyone interested does too.
