The Okami 20th anniversary key artwork is beautifully displayed at the entrance with an added 3D element as part of the sash jumps right out of the art.
I went with my fellow Okami loving friend and my little one to check out the Okami 20th anniversary collaboration at the Capcom Cafe. It was another overcast and rainy week so we hoped visiting Amaterasu, the sun goddess herself, and offering some of our hard earned otaku savings would clear up the rest of the week.
The Menu
Unlike the smaller collaboration held back in April to June at Pasella locations (look out for a future post about how that experience compares) this menu was a lot more extensive. There was an Okami collaboration previously held at the Capcom Cafe a few years ago but all of the menu items were completely renewed for the 20th anniversary. With 15 Okami themed menu items it was nice to have such a wide selection. The classic menu which is full of Monster Hunter themed drinks was also brought back and had a fresh new stock of souvenir bottles too.

The Merch
As many long time fans of the game can attest, we are always starved for more merchandise! This 20th anniversary collaboration cafe rolled out a brand new collection of merch. I do wish I picked up the frosted mug because it was actually really beautiful. The stock image really doesn’t do it justice. I personally picked up the stickers and the Amaterasu wool felt kit. Looking forward to making her and documenting it for you all in the future!

In addition, for dining in at the cafe itself visitors received coasters for each drink ordered and postcards for every 3000yen spent, all featuring parts of the beautiful 20th anniversary artwork.

The Experience

The Capcom Cafe in Ikebukuro is on the smaller side but serves as a rotating themed cafe throughout the year with various collaborations. The front part is a store that anyone can visit any time and shop at even if you don’t have a reservation for the cafe. There’s also a full area of gacha machines and an arcade on the same floor so there’s plenty to do. Not to mention the Capcom themed crane games and gacha forest on the first floor of the building. The nice part about this cafe is while outside the store is a bit chaotic with the sounds of arcade games blaring the inside is quiet and usually has background music playing for whatever theme the cafe is. In this case it was the Okami soundtrack which in my opinion is one of the best game OSTs out there.

The posters were replaced with beautiful Okami artwork and they had little panels with art at each table as well. We had them sit us in the far back next to the kitchen which has a bit more room. That way I could park my little one in her stroller for lunch since most theme cafes don’t have baby booster seats or high chairs. I also brought along some of my own merch to decorate the table more. Of course I couldn’t resist bringing my Amaterasu Nendoroid but I didn’t want to fuss with her accessories since I had to juggle eating lunch and taking care of the little one too. So here she is next to her mini Ammy plushie and a cell phone stand from the Okami collaboration of yesteryear.

I ordered the Yama’s Fireburst Broiled Kamameshi Kettle Rice (【爆炎】で炊き上げた山猫亭の釜飯 [Bakuen] de Taki ageta Yamaneko-tei no Kamameshi) which is a hot rice dish of mushrooms, chicken, and vegetables with some potato salad on the side. Unfortunately a few dishes no longer were being served with monaka Japanese wafers that have the themed designs printed on them. This included my dish but that’s okay since it doesn’t affect the flavor at all.
Monaka Japanese wafers are a staple at themed cafes because they are a light and easy way to print on themed images for dishes. They honestly don’t have a flavor at all and the bigger ones end up just tasting like paper but they’re fun for photos and give the dishes that extra design element. Now proper monaka sandwiches are quite good because they’re generally sweet. There are also soup monaka which melt into soup flavors in hot water. Definitely give monaka a try when you’re visiting Japan even if you aren’t going to a themed cafe because they are a traditional snack here.

My drink was the Princess Fuse and the Eight Canine Warriors of Satomi Fruit Punch Cider (フセ姫と里見八犬士のフルーツポンチサイダー Fuse-hime to Satomi Hatsuken-shi no Furutsu Ponchi Saidaa). It was really cool how they scattered eight different fruits and ingredients in the drink to match the Satomi Canine Warriors. Fishing each fruit out of the smaller cup and getting around the ice was a mini game in itself but with delicious rewards. Just like with my meal there were no more monaka left to decorate my drink because it was so popular but at least I was still able to order it. Thankfully when monaka run out they don’t take the items off the menu if they still have enough ingredients to make them. It’s a good thing I had little Ammy to help theme my own order.

We shared the Divine Blessing Rice Salad (大神降ろしのライスサラダ Okami Oroshi no Raisu Sarada). The special sauce had monaka with the kanji for happiness on it just like in the game when restoring the environment. The dashi flavored rice was mild enough that the little one was able to try a bit and she really liked the chicken too. Other than that she just wasn’t too interested in the food this time around. I switched over to giving her her usual go to outing snacks and she was content to chill while we dug into the rest of our meal.

I chose to get another drink but instead of the Okami menu got the Monster Hunter Energy Drink (活力剤 回復薬ボトル Katsuryoku-zai Kaifukugusuri Botoru). I do wish I had waited to order this for another time but I admit the FOMO from last time took over so I ordered it with the souvenir Potion bottle. Last time they completely sold out and I had been wanting one for over a year so I placed the order. It wasn’t an actual energy drink just themed to look like the in-game one and was instead a refreshing mango water with a few frozen mangos inside but the little one really loved this one.

I did struggle a bit trying to offer it to her between how big the bottle was and also the usual struggles with a paper straw and her biting down on them but she kept asking for more. I think she drank the majority of it in the end so no regrets getting the drink after all since she got to fully enjoy a menu item too. I’m sure she’ll have fun playing with the Potion bottle later at home as well.
We finished off with the dessert and ordered the Amaterasu Strawberry Milk Parfait (アマテラスの苺みるくパフェ Amaterasu no Ichigo Miruku Pafe) to share. I admit that I dug into it so fast I forgot to take pictures. If I manage to nab some from my friend later I’ll add them in. This dessert true to its name was full of strawberries between the fresh strawberries, sauce, and cream. The sakura shaped chocolates and konpeito were also a cute touch and even the fruit granola on the plate added a fun new flavor to each bite. It was very sweet but also felt quite refreshing even with all the cream. A great last note to a yummy themed meal.

Tips & Tricks: If you want to maximize your odds at a collaboration cafe when it comes to coasters or whatever freebies come with your order, be sure to enter everything you know you want at the same time. Usually coasters or whatever randomized item you receive is already in a box in a certain order which means the more you pull at once the greater your odds of not getting duplicates.
What started as a fun little lunch time getaway from the rainy weather turned into a beautifully sunny day as soon as we finished. Amaterasu herself blessed us after paying our dues to her collab cafe. All in all if you want a fun little collab cafe experience that is pretty chill without an overwhelming menu and one of the best game soundtracks playing in the background I highly recommend checking it out while it’s still around.
As of posting there’s less than a week left so if you can squeeze it in I highly recommend checking it out if you’re an Okami fan! You can also pop in just to try to pick up some of the merch but be aware a lot of it has sold out by now.
If you don’t make it in time for the end of the Okami collaboration there will still be merch on sale there or the new Capcom Store in Ikebukuro as well. In addition, the next collaboration at the Capcom Cafe was already announced as Ochaken so if you like adorable tea themed puppers and a classic cafe menu you may want to check it out.
