TL;DR: Dragon Quest Slimes have appeared in the form of delicious traditional Japanese snacks! Check out my full review below.

My brother and sister in-law brought us the coolest otaku omiyage souvenir from Nagoya! If you’re a JRPG or Dragon Quest fan you’ll immediately recognize the franchise’s lovable mascot the Slime.

The ever smiling little blob of a monster that’s been around since the series first installment back in 1986. For those unfamiliar with the franchise; Dragon Quest (also known as Dragon Warrior in North America until 2005) is a legendary Japanese role playing game published by Enix (today known as Square Enix). Its story, characters, and music have inspired many of today’s games in one way or another including Pokémon, Final Fantasy, Earthbound (aka Mother) to name a few.

Needless to say, as fans we were very excited to get unique merchandise of the series especially in snack form! We got the manju red bean bun and the uirou sweet rice jelly. They were made by Aoyagi Souhonke, a Japanese wagashi confectionery company who are well known for their uirou and Kaeru Manju frog shaped red bean bun

It was thanks to the success of the Slime Uirou previously that the company decided to try to recreate the Slime as manju since the design was similar to their signature Kaeru Manju. It was apparently quite the challenging undertaking getting the molds and brands just right that supposedly took them up to 10 months but the final result is amazing.

If you’re a fan of not so sweet snacks then Japanese wagashi are right up your alley. They go great with tea or coffee and we love to enjoy them as an afternoon snack. The Slime Uirou had a very refreshing and subtle flavor and taste even better when chilled first. We greatly appreciated the attention to detail in the vibrant colors that were true to different Slime types from the Dragon Quest series. On the other hand the Slime Manju were so stuffed with koshian smooth red bean paste I could hardly believe it. They really were true to the official website images. If you can, don’t just take my word for it, order and try them for yourself! I’m really impressed by how perfectly they managed to get the Slime faces. Their hard work really paid off.

To our great surprise our little one also enjoy taking a bite out of these Slimes too! Just goes to show you really never know what kids will enjoy nomming on. We were glad we got to share such a fun and unique snack with her too.

This collaboration was put together in conjunction with mobile game Dragon Quest Walk (Chubu) that was hosting their first event in the Tokai area. To commemorate the event these wagashi are being sold not just online on the official store but also in numerous locations throughout the area including a fully themed shop. If you’re in the area be sure to check it out!
